Our Fire Safety in Nurseries course is suitable for people working in a nursery setting. This course will cover the importance of fire safety, EYFS and fire safety requirements, as well as fire safety legislation. This course will cover fire safety legislation for Scotland and Northern Ireland too.

You will then learn what a responsible person is, if they are a legal requirement, as well as the responsible persons duties. You will also explore examples of notable fire incidents in nurseries across the UK.

You will explore possible fire hazards in nurseries and fire prevention methods that can be put in place to prevent fires from occurring, including passive and active methods. You will also explore the types of fire extinguishers available and what they can be used for.

The course will also cover in detail the steps to a risk assessment, who is responsible for a fire risk assessment and how to prepare an emergency plan and provide training. You will gain great knowledge and will feel more confident in writing your own risk assessment.

You will finish the course by exploring evacuation strategies that can be used in the event of a fire, to ensure staff, visitors and children get out of the building safely.

On completion of this course you will have gained greater understanding on what fire safety is, how to ensure fire preventive measures are in place in your nursery and how to carry out a risk assessment.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to fire safety – In the first unit you will be introduced to the importance of fire safety in a nursery setting, you will also explore the relevant fire laws that apply to nursery settings. You will then explore what fire safety is and fire safety nursery statistics in the UK.
  • Unit 2 – Fire hazard – This unit will explore the potential fire hazards that can arise in nursery setting, you will then consider the types and stages of fire. The unit will finish by exploring fire prevention methods, focusing on kitchen fire safety and preventing arson from occurring.
  • Unit 3 – Fire risk assessment – This unit will introduce you to what a fire risk assessment is and why it is important. You will then explore the five steps to a risk assessment in detail. You will then learn who is responsible for a fire risk assessment and the duties of the responsible person.
  • Unit 4 – Fire protective measures – In this unit you will learn what fire safety arrangements are and the legal requirements, you will then consider some examples of preventive and protective measures that can be adopted to reduce the risk of fire, you will then look at the importance of teaching children about fire safety and will look at some examples. The unit will finish by exploring fire safety tests, checks and inspections, you will then look at how these can be recorded.
  • Unit 5 – Emergency procedures and responsibilities – In our final unit you will be introduced to fire emergency procedures and responsibilities, you will learn about Fire Emergency Evacuation Plans (FEEPs) and will consider who is likely to require one. You will then consider how to evacuate babies, toddlers, as well as children with special needs in the event of a fire.
